Accoya® Timber is now available in record volumes in the UK as new window manufacturers come onboard
BSW Timber's revolutionary new modified wood Accoya® is now available in volume across a wide joinery and cladding specification following an increase in production and UK warehousing.

The announcement comes as BSW Timber experiences unprecedented interest in the cutting-edge product. Established customers are placing regular monthly orders and a number of new customers are coming on board.

The boost in production at a new plant at Arnhem, Netherlands, and the warehousing expansion, reflects the continued success of the modified wood in the 12 months since the first supplies arrived in the UK.

Accoya® now accounts for more than half of the UK-wide Sash Window Workshop's production since the firm began using the material in April.

International Timber, which recently signed a major deal with BSW Timber to distribute Accoya®, is also now receiving regular orders from dozens of joinery companies.

Meanwhile, cladding specialists are seeing a significant number of direct Accoya® enquiries for cladding being converted to orders. The extended coated life is also causing a number of established coated timber orders switching to coated Accoya®

For John Alexander, head of business development at BSW Timber, the increased availability of Accoya® has come at the right time with a significant number of enquiries and orders.

"We are pleased to be in a position of strong availability following recent significant increases in capacity in Accoya® production and warehousing.   This commitment and investment is in support of our customers continuing success across the sectors.

He added: "The market development and joinery manufacturers' reaction has been very positive. There has been no betting experience than the positive impression manufacturers develop form working the product. The machined finish and quality of coated surfaces represent dramatic improvements in workability over tropical hardwoods. With its impeccable environmental credentials, we firmly believe Accoya® is set to become the industry standard for exterior applications."

Richard Dollar of Sash Window Workshop, said: “Since taking our first order in April, Accoya® has started to dominate our product range.  Accoya® is the perfect choice for many of our projects as it provides outstanding performance at a sensible cost, I believe it will become the material of choice for quality windows and doors. “

Steve Rogers, product & market director at International Timber, said Accoya® has proven extremely popular among the company's customers.

"Our customers are impressed with the performance attributes of Accoya® particularly its 60 year durability and the significant reduction in timber shrinkage and expansion."

Accoya® represents the UK’s gold standard in modified wood. It has attracted significant interest since the full working stock for joinery, civil and cladding applications was introduced to the UK last year.

Accoya® is the culmination of 80 years of extensive engineering, product testing field testing and market review by leading scientists whose aim was to create a more robust and sustainable material.

Last month, Duncan Baker-Brown – enlisted to design an eco-friendly house for the Channel 4 show Grand Designs Live– said he was impressed with the outstanding durability and performance credentials of the revolutionary modified wood.

Commercial production of Accoya® by Titan Wood, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Accsys Technologies plc, is underway at a new plant at Arnhem, Netherlands. The plant is the first of its type and represents a multi-million pound investment in capital and research & development.

BSW has signed an exclusive agreement with Titan Wood to be the sole supplier of Accoya®, across the UK and Ireland, following five years of extensive collaboration between the two companies.

The start of commercial production is the end-result of almost 80 years of global R&D and field testing in acetylated wood modification - a patented process that protects wood from rot by making it inedible to most micro-organisms and insects.

Accoya® uses wood acetylation technology to deliver outstanding levels of performance, stability and durability. It also boasts excellent environmental credentials, using wood from sustainable plantations and being 100% non-toxic. The wood's appearance, natural colour and strength of the timber are not affected in the process.

Industry experts have supported Accoya's performance and sustainability claims, with both the British Research Establishment and Napier University’s Centre for Timber Engineering recently reporting an unprecedented minimum 60-year service life for the product in cladding and external joinery applications.

The Paint Advisory Bureau has also published research findings that show Accoya® windows are the most cost effective option over the standard design life of a building, outperforming PVC, hardwood and softwoods.
