New Seal Technoligy for Hydraulic Bolt Tensioners

Date: 07/10/08 11:26
Specialist bolt tensioner manufacturer Boltight Ltd has developed an advanced seal technology for hydraulic bolt tensioners that takes advantage of the latest composite materials.

The new seals allow the tensioning piston to be retracted more easily after use. Other benefits include longer operational life and minimal maintenance.  The technology will be used extensively by oil and gas industry.

Boltight’s new seals are a two-piece self-energising design with an ‘O’ ring machined from a special composite material that is self-lubricating and very durable. The seals simply click in to position and require no adjustment. They can be manufactured to suit any piston size.

In use, the Boltight seals dramatically improve bolt tensioner performance. Previously, engineers working on site often found that tools that could be easily retracted were prone to leakage. Those that did not leak are often difficult to retract manually.

With Boltight’s new seal technology, which has been incorporated into all Boltight tools, the effort required to retract the piston is vastly reduced while leakage of oil past the seal has also been eliminated.  This means engineers do not have to use tensioners fitted with heavier and more costly mechanical retraction mechanisms.

Explained Boltight Director Fred Heaton:  “Our new seal technology is the result of extensive design and development. We have focused on the best way to achieve the twin goals of easy retraction and no leakage.  Our customers are very pleased with the results.

“Our customers in the oil and gas, power generation and engineering industries, are finding Boltight’s tools compact, lightweight and easy to use. Bolt tensioning can be carried out in much less time while sill ensuring an accurate and uniform bolt load across a joint face. This is critical.  Inaccurate bolt tightening often leads to inconvenient and costly leaks and even failure of the bolts through fatigue.”

All Boltight tensioning tools are manufactured to exacting safety standards to strong and robust designs.  They are durable and have a long operating life. Equipment working at pressures above 1000 bar is CE marked and conforms to the requirements of the European Equipment Directive.
