Dempsey Dyer will now manufacture all softwood doors from BSW Timber's Accoya® timber and will extend it to other products in the company's range requiring improved stability, durability and coating longevity.
The firm turned to Accoya® for doorsets and window sashes as part of a £130,000 contract to construct 19 townhouses at High House, Purfleet.
The stunning townhouses, close to the M25 and Dartford Bridge, include five-metre high single and double door screens which tie in the ground and first floor of the properties.
Tom Dyer of Dempsey Dyer said the company chose Accoya® after being impressed by the modified wood's enhanced stability qualities.
"This is one of the first projects where Dempsey Dyer has included Accoya exclusively in doors and windows. Now Accoya® is on-stream, all doors specified to us in softwood will now be supplied in Accoya® with the modified wood extended to the rest of our range.
"Following the outstanding success of Accoya for Bellway, it is clear that this modified wood will become the material of choice for exterior applications."
John Alexander, head of business development at BSW Timber, said the move by Dempsey Dyer underlined Accoya's growing popularity.
"This project illustrates the practical application of innovative products such as Accoya® by mainstream builders."
He added: "We are pleased with the market development and positive reaction from joinery manufacturers. This Bellway project demonstrates its impeccable environmental and sustainability credentials and we firmly believe Accoya® is set to become the industry standard for exterior applications."
The success follows praise for Accoya® from the award-winning architect behind the home built by design guru Kevin McCloud for the Grand Designs Live show.
Duncan Baker-Brown – enlisted to design the eco-friendly house for the Channel 4 show – said he was impressed with the outstanding durability and performance credentials of the revolutionary modified wood.
Kevin McCloud himself also paid tribute to the performance qualities of Accoya® in the hit show.
Accoya® has attracted significant interest since the full working stock for joinery, civil and cladding applications was introduced to the UK last year.
Commercial production of Accoya® by Titan Wood, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Accsys Technologies plc, is underway at a new plant at Arnhem, Netherlands. The plant is the first of its type and represents a multi-million pound investment in capital and research & development.
BSW has signed an exclusive agreement with Titan Wood to be the sole supplier of Accoya®, across the UK and Ireland, following five years of extensive collaboration between the two companies.
The start of commercial production is the end-result of almost 80 years of global R&D and field testing in acetylated wood modification - a patented process that protects wood from rot by making it inedible to most micro-organisms and insects.
The technology delivers outstanding levels of performance, stability and durability. It also boasts excellent environmental credentials, using wood from sustainable plantations and being 100% non-toxic. The wood's appearance, natural colour and strength of the timber are not affected in the process.
Industry experts have supported Accoya's performance and sustainability claims, with both the British Research Establishment and Napier University’s Centre for Timber Engineering has reported an unprecedented minimum 60-year service life for the product in cladding and external joinery applications.
The Paint Advisory Bureau has also published research findings that show Accoya® windows are the most cost effective option over the standard design life of a building, outperforming PVC, hardwood and softwoods.
