The award is given annually by Her Majesty the Queen and the winning companies hold it for five years. The award scheme was introduced in 1966 as “The Queen’s Award to Industry”. The result is decided by the queen based on advice from the Prime Minister, who is assisted by an advisory committee including government, industry, commerce and trade unions.

Traka and its staff were awarded The Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2004 for the company's outstanding achievement in innovation.
