Social mobility is sometimes defined as successive generations getting better jobs and recent research has shown that it is very often a lack of education or educational opportunities that prevents this from happening.
In fact, social mobility can be improved by 4 main factors that the Government can help with and these include, making sure that children receive the best start during their early learning. Countries such as Sweden and Denmark have benefited from high quality childcare for many years which has had a positive effect on social mobility within their countries.
There does however appear to be a vicious circle as the better teachers and child care facilities are less likely to be found in deprived areas according to a recent study. This does not however mean that high class teaching and child care facilities cannot be found in areas were wealth does not exist. It may however be possible that good teaching in these areas is less effective as a classroom, nursery or other day care could well have a small number of unruly children who disrupt the class and effectiveness of the teaching.
And the difference between learning with good teaching as opposed to bad can be massive with research showing that children taught by the best teachers can learn at twice the speed as less effective teachers.
So what can be learnt from this latest Government study and what can actually be done about it? Well the most important thing would appear to be that investment in early years childcare is vital to make sure each child, regardless of their location, gets the best opportunities in which to learn and develop.
This investment in early years learning could have a dramatic affect on individual children and society as a whole. Whitney Houston once sang that children are our future and that we should let them lead the way after teaching them well. This lyric is equally as relevant based on this latest Government survey so make sure our children get the best childcare in their early years and hopefully they will have the best chance of getting better jobs, earning more money and benefitting society.
And just as nurseries and schools are careful when choosing service providers like insurance brokers who provide nursery insurance, parents would be wise to do their research when choosing the right nursery, kindergarten or pre school learning establishment for their children. If they choose the right one then the right early learning could result in increased earning for their children in the future.
