Marshall-Tufflex trunking solves DDA compliance issue for private school

For specifiers and clients seeking DDA compliance for the benefit of visually impaired people, Marshall-Tufflex’s new curved trunking system, Odyssey, can be fitted with a variety of colour contrasting accessory boxes.

This is exactly what happened at Old Swinford Hospital School, in Stourbridge, where blue accessory boxes were installed into the trunking system as part of the refurbishment of student study and accommodation blocks. Not only did this deliver a smart image, the coloured accessory boxes also satisfied requirements of Part M of the Building Regulations for assisting people with visual impairment.

Although the 606-roll boarding school – in the top 5% of schools for GCSE results – does not currently have visually impaired students, DDA compliance called for the improvement works to meet the standard, and that meant colour contrasting accessory boxes. Such has been the positive response to the system that the school is likely to specify Odyssey for future building schemes. Philip Coyle, director of estates and facilities management at the school, said: “If we hadn’t used Odyssey we would have been faced with the considerable extra cost of installing different coloured accessory plates. Odyssey's curved profile gives it a smart, contemporary appearance. From a practical perspective it is easy to clean, has in-built cable trays and is, above all, secure. The system has worked really well – in fact it is the best trunking I have ever worked with.”

Some 150 metres of Odyssey was installed at the school. The main electrical contractor on the project was Whittaker Bros of Dudley and the system supplier Eyre & Elliston of Lye, in the West Midlands.

As the first three-compartment, PVC-U system on the market with a completely curved outer profile, Odyssey is notable for the ease with which it can be cleaned and kept clear of clutter. Cat 6 compliant, its adjustable bends are fitted using a uniquely tight, clip-on and locking action, designed to prevent accidental dislodgement. Odyssey is quick and easy to fit, all the more so as no corner mitres are involved. Its resilience makes it ideal for areas of intense activity such as schools and hospitals.
