Local Firms Cradle in success

19 July 2013

A local company is celebrating success after its recent partnership with long-standing clients has seen the galvanizing of crucial elements used by a world-leading youth work charity.

Glasgow-based Scottish Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, was called upon by Tennamast (Scotland) Ltd to provide its specialist hot-dip galvanizing treatment to 4,000-5,000kg of steel cradles for Greenock-based Ocean Youth Trust, which will be used to secure boats in place whilst essential maintenance is undertaken.

Ocean Youth Trust, a charitable organisation which provides youngsters with award-winning training voyages out at sea, has already provided over 100,000 young people aged 12-25 from a diverse range of backgrounds with a unique opportunity to build self-confidence and respect through shared experiences of adventures under sail.

Calum Mackie of Ayrshire-based Tennamast (Scotland) Ltd, explained: “The cradles used for this project are slightly bigger than our standard range, and require at least two people to build, using bolts to join the pieces together. Measuring at 13.5m x 7m, the cradles can be dismantled easily for storage but are quite difficult to transport as the largest section is 6m long.

We work alongside Scottish Galvanizers on a weekly basis, as the majority of our products are produced for use in a marine environment such as boat yards, harbours, and marinas, so galvanizing is a crucial element to protect them against corrosion and weathering.”

Paul Tait, Commercial Manager at Scottish Galvanizers, commented: “This has been a really exciting project to be involved with. The boats are regularly in the sea for many months or years at a time, so they require frequent maintenance to keep them in good condition which the cradles play a vital part in, enabling young people to enjoy these fantastic sea adventures for many more years to come.”

Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years.  With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.
