Plastazote in innovative turntable for record player

14 August 2013

The Client Ramfoam is the UK’s leading converter of Zotefoams products, and one of Europe’s premier Polyethylene foam converters, supplying slit and laminated sheets through to complex CNC machined packaging inserts and composite foam structures. Ramfoam has supplied Zotefoams products to Rega Research, a company that designs and develops specialist hi-fi products

The Challenges/Needs

Rega Research was designing a radical new turntable of custom designed materials. They needed the material to be engineered to exact tolerances. The customer has previously used Medium-Density Fibreboard (MDF), an engineered wood product, but the material did not prove to be good enough for the application. Rega Research required a lighter and more rigid material which could allow them to reduce the weight, and give superior sound quality.

They were also looking for multi composite design containing phenolic resin board laminations.   Zotefoams is our partner of choice and has maintained its premier supplier status to us for nearly two decades. With their range of Azote® and HPP grades of foams it allows us the day-to-day security of quality and service whilst allowing us to develop some of the world’s finest foam solutions for the future.”
Phil Johnson, Managing Director, Ramfoam

The Solution
Ramfoam supplied Rega Research with a composite product containing Plastazote HD 110 which is a light-weight material that could be machined to exact tolerances +/- 0.2 mm. Since it is a high density polymer (HDPE) of 110 kg/m, it is a more rigid material with a superior sound quality than MDF. Due to the nitrogen gas expansion process, Plastazote is a very pure material with a consistent density profile throughout the sheet which is why the material Rega Research specified to give world class sound quality of their latest designed turntables.
