Ready, Set Go, For Glasgow Project

10 December 2013

Two Scottish firms, who have played a key role in the construction of a major sports village in Scotland, are celebrating their ongoing success and involvement in the ambitious project.

Scottish Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, and East Kilbride-based CTM Fabrications joined forces to provide their expertise and services in the construction of the Athletes’ Village which will provide accommodation for more than 8,000 athletes and officials from various nations during the Commonwealth Games, taking place next year.

Colin Vance, of CTM Fabrications, explained: “As one of Europe’s largest regeneration areas, the Glasgow Commonwealth project will prove hugely beneficial to the region, with as many as 700 houses being transformed into permanent homes. We required the team at Scottish Galvanizers to provide their specialist hot-dip treatment to various steel fittings and structures used for the windows and doors of the village, to ensure longevity of the work, and to tie in with the overall design and aesthetics.”

The construction of the Athletes’ Village began in 2009 and transformed the old site from a mix of residential, industrial, and open spaces, to a brand new community at the heart of the East End which will provide accommodation for thousands of local people following the Commonwealth Games.

Due for completion in January 2014, the Athletes’ Village has 260,000 fittings, pieces of equipment and items of furniture all obtained from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and will be provided with hot water from an Energy Centre nearby, which also supplies hot water to the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

Paul Tait, Commercial Manager of Scottish Galvanizers, explained: “We’ve had a fantastic time during this project and the team at CTM Fabrications has created some superb structures which tie in with the theme of the village brilliantly. We’re honoured to have been involved in this prestigious build and look forward to partnering with CTM again in the future.”

Designed with input from the athletes themselves, the Village is situated in close proximity to Celtic Park, venue of the Opening Ceremony next year, and has retail and recreational areas, as well as a dining hall, medical facilities and a number of various other amnesties for the athletes.

Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years.  With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.
