Completion of cycle hub complments major development's progress

16 June 2016

A leading galvanizing company has provided its services to a specialist steel manufacture for the creation of a new cycle hub as part of a £multi-million development on the outskirts of Manchester.

The two Merseyside-based businesses, Merseyside Galvanizers and Suresteel Services, have worked together over the last two months to create an innovative cycle hub as part of the £200million X1MediaCity development in Manchester, which is set to see four new tower blocks built at Salford Quays to house 1,036 new apartments, as well as a private gym and cinema for residents, it is also the new home of the BBC.

Merseyside Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, provided its specialist hot-dip galvanizing to treat around six tonnes of metal for Suresteel Services, who were contracted to fabricate the dedicated cycle hub.

Kev Powell of Suresteel Services, explained: “We’re thrilled to have been part of such a large-scale project and to have worked with the team at Merseyside Galvanizers. Our contractor initially specified that the steel used to build the cycle hub was painted, but we pushed for it to be galvanized as we knew this would mean it would last a lifetime and be effectively protected from the elements.”

Richard Smetham, Sales Manager at Merseyside Galvanizers, commented: “We’re really pleased that the team at Suresteel Services pushed for galvanizing as a form as protection for the cycle hub.

Painting can be really effective and eye-catching at first, but once the steel has been exposed to weathering, it does start to corrode and look shabby. Galvanizing protects steel from all forms of damage and it can also be painted afterwards if needed for aesthetics, although many companies do prefer the modern look of galvanized steel.”
