Wheelabrator technology upgrades blast cleaning facility

18 September 2009

Airblast room enhances blast cleaning coverage for San Carlos, California based Delta Star Inc.

Delta Star has been manufacturing quality, custom-made products for over 100 years, building medium-power transformer and mobile substations for the electrical power energy sector. Working with a local distributor, Wheelabrator Group technical regional manager, Kevin Poling, began working with Delta Star to replace its non-recovery floor airblast room with a newer version.

Following the installation of a Wheelabrator H-shaped reclaim recovery floor airblast room, the improved technology provided excellent results.

“We have been able to increase our productivity levels with the installation of the Wheelabrator® Airblast Room.  When we’ve needed technical assistance, Wheelabrator Group personnel have been very quick and efficient in responding to our needs. Our operators are also very pleased with the smooth transition the system has played in our plant site,” stated Pablo Noda, Supervisor, Welding, Fabrication and Paint Shop, Delta Star, Inc.

When parts are ready for cleaning, an operator drives in a powered rotating turn-table cart allowing the parts to be rotated for blasting. This has resulted in an estimated 30 to 40 percent reduction in blast cleaning time by the manual operators. Equipped with an Abrasive on Demand (AOD™) system, the airblast room offers superior control over abrasive processing for surface preparation. With the grate covered H-shaped recovery floor, abrasive falls off the cart to the sides, where the operator uses the air only feature of his blast hose to blow the abrasive into the recovery system. Another feature is the addition of six tube fluorescent light fixtures providing better visibility for the manual blast operators.

“The Wheelabrator Airblast Room stole the show during June’s Weidmann Electrical Technology Power Transformers Seminar, attended by over 80 engineers in our industry. They were all impressed by the ease of the rotating turn-table and its operational capacity.” said Ben Magana, Operations Manager, Delta Star, Inc.

Prior to shipment, Wheelabrator Group fully assembled the airblast room. Kevin Poling and Wheelabrator personnel worked closely with Delta Star, providing custom plant drawings and designs to ensure a proper operational fit at the company’s renovated plant site. The new airblast room system has cut down overall maintenance, improved health and safety measures (due to larger workspace), and reduced material handling and labour hours; resulting in significant savings for Delta Star.
