Event organisers told to manage traffic control themselves

04 February 2010

In recent months there has been a move towards greater concern with traffic control at events.

In recent months Wall to Wall Communications, one of the UKs' leading radio communications suppliers, have noticed a slight change in priorities for event organisers in terms of the safety requirements of their radio systems. This shift has been towards a concern with traffic control, perhaps unsurprisingly considering the recent news that Gwent Police have announced plans to stop providing officers to direct traffic during local events. A move which could well be repeated by other police forces across the country.

Event Industry News have told of a Gwent Police report, to a Monmouthshire County Council area committee meeting, stating that the police “will not agree to any traffic management plan that has a requirement for police officers or community support officers to direct traffic even if the event organisers are willing to pay for the police to do it.”

Brent Coe, sales executive responsible for events and hire services at WTW, has said;

“Traffic control is an area which seems to be growing within the events industry, along with a more general move towards a greater concern with health and safety. Event organisers have, in the past, relied on the logistical support of local police. Wall to Wall have supplied communications systems to many events over the past year. Many of which have asked specifically for systems to aid their handling of high volumes of traffic and road closures. This is something which we are of course happy and fully able to supply."
