Design Ideas for a small bathroom

19 March 2010

It is a common misconception that size goes hand in hand with style. Minimalism is fast becoming a widely accepted fashion concept that is applicable to almost every aspect of life.

So should you find  yourself making plans for a small bathroom somewhere in your house, do not for  one second think that simply because it is small it cannot still be a stylish  addition that will boost your home's chic levels.
One hugely effective way of dispelling the sense of claustrophobia that is often found in small rooms is to use lighting effectively. Take full advantage of any windows the room has, and if the bathroom is in a loft, putting in a big skylight will give your bathroom a far larger sense of space. If a skylight is out of the question, frosted glass over the existing windows or the addition of halogen spots will give the room a spacious feel.

Soft, welcoming colours will make your bathroom far more appealing. Imagine walking into a bathroom painted with bright greens and reds, and what a garish experience this would be, especially in a smaller room. Soft tones and warm tiles will do away with any feelings of enclosure. It is always better to choose light colours over dark ones, as they too will increase the feeling of space in your bathroom.

If you are planning a small bathroom for your house, you will want to keep clutter to a minimum. It is easy to get carried away with filling your bathroom with things, but remember that knick-knacks that collect on the windowsill go better with the crockery and flowery wallpaper you would find in your grandparents house. A simple design with the bare necessities of a bathroom speaks far more of style than one cluttered with unnecessary bits and bobs.

Anyone who has used a bathroom before (which hopefully includes most of us) will know that some forms of clutter are unavoidable. Toothbrushes, makeup and beauty products all tend to pile up around the basin. An effective way to dispel this kind of clutter is to invest in some built in storage. Deep, easily accessible drawers will allow you space to put your beauty products in, making for a less cluttered and more spacious feel overall.

Small bathrooms offer a perfect opportunity to inject some style into your house, and as long as they are well planned, are a valuable addition to any household.
