Gradus provide total protection for new health centre

14 September 2010

The contract interiors specialists has supplied barrier matting, carpet and wall protection, to provide a vibrant, hygienic design the new £20 million community health centre in Hartlepool.

Designed by West and Machell Architects, One Life Hartlepool is a state-of-the-art NHS primary care facility, serving one third of Hartlepool’s population.  The ground floor houses four GP surgeries and a pharmacy, while the upper floors provide day surgery facilities and a range of outpatient clinics, including audiology, podiatry, and speech and language therapy.

To help create a hygienic and attractive environment for patients and staff, Gradus supplied and installed a complete wall protection system that included wall guards, corner guards, rubrails and Sanparrel PVC-u protective sheeting in a special bespoke ‘boys and girls’ design, unique to the facility’s children’s areas. Gradus also supplied Access primary barrier matting for installation in the centre’s entrances and Bodega carpet for the office areas and some clinic rooms.

Developed under the governments' LIFT initiative, Care Partnerships 25 Ltds' Project Manager, Scott Clarkson explained;

"The new facility plays a vital role in the town’s regeneration and is an exciting development for the people of Hartlepool. Providing the community with a safe, vibrant and modern building was essential to One Life’s design, which is why we turned to Gradus. We are very happy with the results, especially in the children’s areas where the bespoke boy and girl cut outs have also acted as a real talking point.”

The Sanparrel PVC-u sheet in the children’s areas provides a durable layer that is easy to clean and will protect against surface scuffs and scratches that can harbour germs and bacteria. The unique design was created specifically for One Life Hartlepool and supplied in a variety of vibrant colours to create an appealing and friendly environment for younger patients.  Rubrails cut from Sanparrel PVC-u sheet were also installed to protect walls from damage caused by the movement of furniture such as chairs.

Fitted in the centres' corridors, Gradus InPro 1300 PVC-u wall guards provide impact protection against wheeled traffic such as trolleys and wheelchairs. High impact PVC-u corner guards were fitted to all external corners in the clinical areas to absorb and deflect impact, where trolley damage could be expected. The wall and corner guards have replaceable PVC-u covers that are through-coloured and textured to conceal the effects of impact and abrasion.

The wall protection solution was completed with heavy-duty rubber D-fender wall guards which were installed in the back of house areas such as bin stores and receipt and distribution rooms, helping to reduce maintenance costs in these areas subject to heavier traffic, in terms of frequency and type.

In addition, Gradus supplied Access primary barrier matting with Nightfall wipers for the main lobby areas to prevent dirt and moisture being tracked in to the building by pedestrian and wheeled traffic. This protects adjacent floorcoverings and reduces cleaning requirements, whilst reducing the risk of slips and trips.
Finally, Bodega carpet was fitted in a variety of colourways to provide a durable and easy to maintain floorcovering solution in the clerical offices and audiology department.

Gradus Accessories Product Manager, Caroline Davies;

“Public buildings such as health centres are faced with a number of design challenges, including the need to create accessible and appealing environments that are also durable. We are pleased to have supported One Life Hartlepool and to provide them with a suite of products that will provide both the owners and users with peace of mind.”
