WATER TREATMENT PLANT MAKING A SPLASH

A long-standing business partnership dating back more than 25 years,
is playing a vital role in ambitious plans to deliver cleaner – and greener – drinking water to almost half a million Scottish people.Glasgow-based Scottish Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has galvanized more than 800 tonnes of structural steelwork and associated metalwork used by Solway Structural Steel as part of ongoing construction at the new ‘eco-friendly’ £130million Glencorse Water Treatment Works on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
After being hot-dip galvanized, the steel has been used to create the beams, rafters and other structural work required at both the actual water treatment plant and its adjoining intake building.
Paul Tait, Customer Services Manager for Scottish Galvanizers, revealed: “This has been a really exciting project to be involved with. Much of the new facility is concealed underground, and the parts that aren’t will be fitted with grass-covered roofs – said to be some of the largest in Scotland – so that they blend into the landscape of the neighbouring Pentland Hills.”
“Roughly a third of the energy needed to power the plant will be generated on site by a hydro turbine and the overall project has already secured top marks from the Civil Engineering Environmental Quality (CEEQUAL) assessment scheme,” Paul added.
Con Brennan, General Manager for Solway Structural Steel, said: “We’ve worked with Scottish Galvanizers for more than 25 years on a wide range of projects, from numerous water treatment works like this current initiative, to sports stadia, leisure centres and civic halls. Over the years, we’ve got to know all the staff really well and know they’ll pull out all the stops to help us and provide a thoroughly professional service.”
The new treatment works is on-schedule to be completed by the middle of next year and will replace two ageing facilities at nearby Fairmilehead and Alnwickhill that were built more than 100 years ago. When fully operational, it will supply water to 450,000 people across Edinburgh and Midlothian.
