Local firm helps pay worldly tribute

09 February 2011

A Cambridgeshire firm has offered its services to a local artist to help him create a dramatic work of art for display at Bottisham Village College in memory of a former governor of the school.

East Anglian Galvanizing, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, provided its expertise in the form of its specialist galvanizing service to Cambridge artist Matt Sanderson who was commissioned by the David Urwin Arts Trust to develop the piece.

Entitled the ‘World Tree’, the sculpture is an original design inspired by Norse legends and took 12 months to produce, using 3,000 metres of metal piping, with each element of the intricate sculpture crafted entirely by hand.

Following construction of the 12-foot high steel sphere, East Anglian Galvanizing was appointed to undertake the process of galvanizing the metal, which involved it being dipped in molten zinc at a temperature of 450°C.

Matt Sanderson commented: “We employed the services of East Anglian Galvanizing to protect the sculpture and were delighted with the end result.  Having used the firm on a number of previous occasions, I was confident that they would deliver, particularly as the task in-hand was quite complex due to the shape and size of the individual steel elements.

“As a hugely significant project for all those involved, it was imperative that we did all we could to ensure that, once completed, the work of art was protected from environmental elements such as the weather, and by galvanizing every inch of steel  used to create the sculpture, East Anglian Galvanizing has ensured just that.”

The sculpture is the final piece funded by the David Urwin Arts Trust which was established in 1998 to support the visual, literary and performing arts industry within the area surrounding Bottisham Village College, and which is being wound-up after more than 20 years.

Selwyn Parrish, Sales Manager at East Anglian Galvanizing, said: “We were delighted to be able to play our part in helping this project come to fruition and we would like to congratulate Matt on the creation of a stunning piece of artwork.  We hope that our contribution will enable the sculpture to remain a focal point for students, visitors and the community for many years to come.”

Wedge Group Galvanizing is one of the largest hot dip galvanizing organisations in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years.  With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, they offer a truly national galvanizing service.
