Selecting the most appropriate access equipment for the job

26 May 2011

Aluminium Access Towers are one of the most common types of scaffold access system used in the UK. The Health & Safety Executive and PASMA have approved two methods of tower assembly (and dismantle) – the 3T Method and the Advance Guardrail Method.

On selecting the most appropriate access equipment for the job, the user and persons responsible for the system of work process selected, must understand that justification of choice should be made against what can happen, before it happens.

Therefore, it is essential that duty holders understand the statutory requirements, in particular the Work at Height Regulations 2005 (6:3). Correctly selecting the most appropriate equipment for work at height makes compliance possible or provides reasoning to possibly justify why safer alternatives required by the Work at Height Hierarchy have been ruled out.

The Work at Height Hierarchy states that collective protection should be used ahead of mitigating measures. Unfortunately, there is confusion within Industry as to what exactly collective protection constitutes.
The Advance Guardrail Method falls within the category of collective protection by eliminating the risk of fall from height through positioning of the guardrail and platform before the user ascends to the next working lift.

Turner Access is committed to the development of safer systems of work, and as a result product innovation is at the heart of company operation. Turner’s external telescopic advance guardrail has now been superseded with the revolutionary BetaGuard® Integral Advance Guardrail, providing substantial improvement in terms of ease of use, simplicity and efficiency.

BetaGuard® Collective Protection Training is now available across most of the UK and Ireland. It has also been incorporated into Turner Access’s PASMA Training curriculum, which now offers training on both approved assembly methods. BetaGuard® Training is available to aluminium scaffold tower users as well as planners, supervisors, managers and safety auditors, who are required to plan, select, organise and supervise safe systems of work being used.
