New stronger Kwik Clean Grate Magnets from Eriez

28 October 2011

Developments in magnet technology over the past decade have resulted in significantly stronger Magnetic Tubes providing levels of iron separation previously impossible.

Eriez Magnetics Europe Ltd manufactures and utilises these Magnetic Tubes in powerful Grate configurations including the new Kwik Clean design. The Eriez Magnetic Grate is designed to specifically protect against fine and tramp iron contamination found in dry and free-flowing substances.

Magnetic Grates are constructed from Tube Magnets which are cylindrical permanent magnets contained within a stainless steel tube. The permanent magnetic element is of a Mega (10,500 gauss) or Xtreme™ (12,000 gauss) Rare Earth Strength, the selection of which depends on the type and quantity of contamination encountered. The correct type of Rare Earth magnet can yield very high magnetic field strengths and gradients enabling them to extract the very smallest particle of iron or rust.

Eriez have various models of standard Magnetic Grates available and can also design special configurations for specific customer needs. Included in the range are Drawer Grates (D Grates) and Circular Drawer Grates (CD Grates) which can be easily and quickly installed in closed, vertical chutes or ducts via an opening made in the side. In addition to these is the Magnetic Grate in Housing (GH) which consists of a double bank of Magnetic Grates fitted in a heavy duty housing with top and bottom flanges to allow immediate insertion into customers’ existing chute work. A front door panel provides easy access to the grates for cleaning purposes and quick release swing bolted access fitted as standard. The magnetic components of the Kwik Clean Grates come in a range of different sizes depending on the situation. Both the Kwik Clean D Grates (KCD) and the CD Grates (KCCD) consist of a single bank whilst the Kwik Clean Grate in Housing (KCGH) contains a double bank and are all constructed from 304 stainless steel.

Where high levels of ferrous contamination are expected, the new Kwik Clean designs provide a quick and easy method of removing collected iron, thus reducing downtime. With these models, the magnetic tubes are situated in a thin sheath to which the collected iron is attracted.  During the cleaning cycle the magnets are simply withdrawn from the sheath and the ferrous particles fall off. This design can be incorporated in both Drawer type and Grate in Housing models.

Along with the standard range of Magnetic Grates Eriez also offer a ProGrade range. These include standard size round, square, housed and auto cleaning Grates (The AKC) which Eriez are able to supply at very competitive prices whilst maintaining their high quality standards. All of the ProGrade range are kept in stock so are available for immediate despatch proving very advantageous for minimising downtime.

Paul Fears, Managing Director at Eriez commented, “Grate Magnets are used extensively already, and this redesign is focused on enhancing the separation performance, whilst simplifying maintenance (cleaning). It is another step in our quest to adapt to meet the changing needs and expectations of our customers.”
