Engineer - Hardware and Firmware
Smart Fibres is
a growing and dynamic technology Company pre-eminent in the field
of optical fibre sensing. Using a mix of technologies we develop products
and systems, which give clients critical information about equipment in
inaccessible places and often in extreme conditions. Applications for our
products have been found in many markets including Oil & Gas, Wind Power,
Marine and Aerospace.
Our projects
range from the simple supply of catalogue products, to the development and
supply of complete mechanical, optical and electronic systems to customer
specifications.
We are looking
to recruit a Development Engineer with skills in Hardware and
Firmware design to join our engineering team. The successful candidate
will have opportunities to expand their skills portfolio into other areas such
as embedded software design and PC level application design.
Salary: from £20K to £35K dependent on experience
The Role
Suitable candidates will have at least 1 year’s
experience in electronic engineering or other similar discipline. This is a
development role, and the individual would reinforce the Smart Fibres
engineering team and contribute to delivering our internal development roadmap.
Principal responsibilities:
o Contributing
to the design, documentation, release, test and debugging of the VHDL firmware
for FPGA devices
o Designing,
releasing, testing and debugging of digital or analogue electronic circuits.
o Liaising
with key suppliers for the manufacturing of such circuits
Secondary responsibilities:
o Contributing
to the writing, testing, documenting and maintaining of embedded software
o Contributing
to the writing, testing, documenting and maintaining of PC based interface
software for the company’s instrumentation products.
Essential skills and attributes:
o Qualified
to degree level in electronics engineering or related discipline
o Hardware
design using CAD tools, preferably Altium Designer.
o Knowledge
of DAC, ADC, amplifiers, power converters, feedback control
o Interfacing
to FPGA chips.
o VHDL
Firmware development with Xilinx and Altera.
- Good
interpersonal skills, effective team player.
- Able to work
to deadlines
o
Fluent English speaker
Desirable skills and attributes, some of the following
would be advantageous:
o PCB
layout skills
o Embedded
software development in C/C++
o Familiarity
with embedded Linux
o LabView
interface development
o Signal
processing
o Experience
in Mechanical Engineering
- Good reporting
skills
- Good
attention to detail
o Willing
to take a hands-on approach
o Highly
numerate, computer literate, commercially astute
