Socomec's latest Critical Power Technology: On show at Railex 2013

30 April 2013

Low voltage power specialist, Socomec, has built on its extensive experience in the European rail sector to develop a range of advanced critical power solutions - including the IP+ UPS Rail range - specifically for the unique requirements of UK rail sector.

The range will be showcased at Railtex 2013, 30th April – 2nd May, and represents the very latest in critical power technology for the mass transportation sector, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of rail networks and infrastructure.
Delivering robust, efficient and proven solutions to the UK market, the latest Socomec UPS and Emergency Lighting technology has already been successfully implemented as part of high profile projects at King’s Cross station, Leyton Underground station and Cross Rail.

As with all Socomec installations, the ongoing performance of the system is managed by highly skilled and experienced engineering team with the necessary trackside training and accreditations to install and maintain equipment throughout the product lifecycle.  A nationwide network of specialist engineers provides local support 24/7/365 to guarantee operational continuity providing very low MTTR.

With unprecedented numbers choosing to travel by rail, the ongoing performance of the installed systems is vital.  Andrew Wilkinson, Regional Managing Director of Socomec explains, “High quality engineering support is a vital component in any business continuity plan and is, unfortunately, often overlooked until something goes wrong. Socomec’s dedicated critical power engineering team ensures business continuity, optimises efficiency and guarantees the safe performance of UPS and Emergency Lighting systems in Rail applications.”

Socomec understands that every application is unique and can create bespoke solutions to meet specific performance requirements.

The Socomec IP+ range - which has been awarded a Product Registration Certificate by Transport For London (TFL) London Underground - is the first and only UPS range currently listed on the London Underground (LU) Product Register and to hold “authorised for use” status.

In order to gain this important authorisation the Socomec range had to demonstrate compliance with the demanding LU Section 12 specification as well as with EMC Standards  EN 50121-4, EN62040-2 and LUL EMC Standards: 1-222, G-222 and 1-196.

The Socomec Masterys IP+ Rail is housed within a compact, robust steel-framed enclosure – almost twice the thickness of standard UPS cabinets - and has anti-corrosion tropicalised circuit boards.

Available with IP31 or IP52 ingress protection, this system will operate in environments where there is conductive dust or dripping water.  The electromagnetic disturbance immunity level is double that required by European standards and the internal components meet the strict, low smoke requirements of rail sector customers.

Power options range from 10 – 80 kVA for three-phase models and 10 – 60 kVA for single-phase models.  Specifically designed to have a very long MTBF:  >202,000 hours, modules can be paralleled up to 6 units.

Furthermore, units can be customised to meet specific requirements, including power supplied from the OLI.

Also on show will be Socomec’s Statys 32A, a static transfer solution supplied by two independent, alternative sources as well as the Netys RT for IT and networking infrastructures.  Socomec’s Solutions for Power Control and Safety specialises in solutions for low voltage switching components and protection systems – many of which perfectly match the demanding requirements of the UK rail sector and provide protection, guaranteed power availability and outstanding efficiency.

Fuserbloc – a comprehensive range of high quality fuse combination systems from 20 to 1250 Amp – protects against overload and provides local safety isolation.

Sircover and Atys – a range of manual and automatic transfer and bypass switches from 16 to 3200 Amp – provide vital support to emergency systems and signalling and provide alternate and standby power availability.  For the latest energy management systems, Countis and Diris provide a wide range of high functionality single and three phase active energy meters, power measurement devices and network analysers for use with Socomec’s Vertelis software.
