Local Firm Plugs into Renewable Energy Project

A local firm has played an important role in the ongoing construction of a £multi-million biomass storage facility that is set to house thousands of tonnes of eco-friendly fuel.
Heywood-based Pillar Wedge, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has galvanized more than 1200 tonnes of steel on behalf of Warrington-based Total Steelwork & Fabrications Ltd as part of a new biomass storage and transfer facility for one of the UK’s biggest utility suppliers, situated at the Liverpool Docks.The new facility, which is currently under construction on the coal site depot in Bootle, Liverpool, has seen Pillar Wedge galvanize 865 tonnes of steel for the main building, which was 170m long by 75m wide and a 35m high portal frame, as well as a further 440 tonnes for the transfer towers, secondary steel, trestles and rail loading facilities.
It will take delivery of thousands of tonnes of wood pellet biomass for co-firing the supplier’s plants nationwide, and the fuel will be taken from the ships and relayed via a series of conveyors into the new bulk storage facility and afterwards, using conveyors, loaded onto trains for transportation across the country.
