Rain, rain, go away

10 February 2014

The new visitor centre at Hengistbury Head – the stunning nature reserve near Bournemouth - was opened in December and we are proud to report that the outside area has been finished off in Resin Bound Terrabound (installed by our approved contractor Total Protection (GB) Ltd).

Hengistbury Head is acclaimed for its diversity of wildlife and geology and is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The land was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1990, as a commitment by the town of Bournemouth to conserving and enhancing the environment.

Terrabound was chosen for its porosity and, even with the heavy rain we’ve experienced recently, Jacqui van Bommel, Landscape Officer at Bournemouth Borough Council says that the surfacing is performing well.

‘The Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre has been open for the last six weeks. We’ve been very busy and the Terrabound looks as good as the day it was laid,” says Jacqui. “While the surrounding surfaces have been covered with water and mud, it is very gratifying to see lovely dry, clean golden Terrabound next to it.”

She continues: “The main courtyard previously used to flood regularly and, with our drainage interventions and the porosity of the Terrabound, I am very pleased with how the surface has performed so far, even with an extremely high water table.”

We worked closely with Jacqui over the choice of gravel incorporated in the Terrabound. She specified some local stone and we provided testing to check suitability.
