Scottish Galvanizers on Right Tracks With Train Project

A local firm has teamed up on a £25 million project which is set to transform Edinburgh’s second largest train station into a major transport link.
Glasgow-based Scottish Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has provided its specialist hot-dip galvanizing treatment to over 200 tonnes of galvanized steel on behalf of Ayrshire-based J & D Pierce Contracts Ltd, as part of a £multi-million project which is set to revamp Edinburgh’s Haymarket Station, the biggest overhaul in the station’s 170 year history. The project saw the plant galvanize steel, which has largely been used for the new canopy steelwork on the newly extended platforms. The redevelopment of the station, which is set to be mostly finished by next year, will see its capacity increase from 4 million passengers a year to an anticipated 10 million passengers by 2030, driven by the soon-to-be introduced electric trains across the whole rail network, which will cut journey times significantly. The station will also act as an integrated transport interchange, linking trains with the new tram system.

Andrew Caldwell, Estimating Manager at J & D Pierce, explained: “We called upon the services of Scottish Galvanizers because galvanizing is the only finish that ensures the steelwork is protected against rusting and corrosion. The finish will relinquish the need for regular maintenance, which can cause huge disruption and delays to passengers who rely upon the station day-to-day.”
