Success for the Chromium Free Polymer Phosphate.

Chromium-free polymer phosphate process achieves significant production benefits

A chromium- and fluoride-free, multi-metal pretreatment conversion process with excellent adhesion and creep corrosion properties – ‘Phos-Fast 971 T’, from Blackfast Chemicals Ltd – is a direct replacement for traditional pretreatments on aluminium extrusions, and aluminium, steel and other metal-engineered components.

Phos-Fast 971T is a polymer phosphate based single-stage process, which runs like a conventional iron phosphate conversion coating – ie: clean/phosphate, rinse and seal – and has been shown in independent tests to provide over 1000 hours neutral salt spray on steel and over 3000 hours on aluminium.  It is said to be ideal for use before powder coating.

The process achieves a very high conversion coating efficiency. This ensures minimal removal of material from the metal surfaces, resulting in very low levels of sludge and a long bath life (up to three years) – bath consumption is as much as 50% less than a traditional phosphate bath. Only weekly checking and infrequent replenishment is required. Solution concentrations are easily controlled by simple titration. Due to the high efficiency of the product energy requirements are also reduced. VOC, BOD and COD emissions are also minimised.

Suitable for either soak or spray application and, as it is a single-stage process (the cleaning stage is eliminated), Phos-Fast 971T reduces process time, cost and increases throughput. The resultant conversion coats are resistant to high temperature accelerated adhesion tests: heating in water to 125°C for two hours gives no loss of topcoat adhesion.

Existing users of Phos-Fast 971 T include automotive component, shopfitting and medical cabinet manufacturers, powder coating subcontractors and architectural aluminium manufacturers. The process has replaced conventional iron and zinc phosphate lines, and is reported to have achieved significant production benefits and improved surface coating performance.

Blackfast Chemicals is well known for its established ‘Blackfast’ room-temperature blacking product – a non-hazardous, easy to use, quick and cost-effective “zero-discharge” process for blacking machined components. The Blackfast process is suitable for a small blacking line or for full automation and does not materially affect component dimensions.  It provides a uniform, durable, corrosion-resistant finish over machined surfaces, threads and blind holes. Coverage per litre is high and the resultant cost-per-unit of blacking is markedly less than traditional blacking. The company has also recently introduced ‘Blackfast LP’, a cathodic electrophoretic process for depositing a tough, black-pigmented coating onto any substrate that can normally be electroplated.
