Pupils celebrate new playground facilities after grand opening

13 April 2015

Children and their parents joined teachers, governors and supporters of St Mary’s CofE School in St Neots, to celebrate the grand opening of its brand new play facilities and outdoor learning area.

Incorporating a physical adventure trail, safety surfacing and outdoor classroom area, the new playground facilities were installed by Sovereign Play Equipment and provides pupils access to an assortment of playtime activities. Play equipment was chosen to provide children with opportunities to develop their balance, agility and coordination through play and the wider Physical Education curriculum, whereas the new outdoor classroom area provides much needed shade and shelter for outdoor learning and a quiet area for break times, where children can chat or read quietly.

Headteacher, Jenny Overs, commented: “Children tried out the equipment straight after the opening, with all children from the three year olds in nursery, to the eleven year olds in Year 6 having a go. They all agreed that the new equipment is wonderful, exceeding their expectations and are looking forward to using it for many years to come. I would also like to congratulate the School Council, ably assisted by staff and parent governors, for their hard work and determination in designing and organising such an ambitious project. They have done a fantastic job and their ideas and imagination have given us a playground that is what the children wanted.”

Speaking about the new playground, Grace Wilkes, school councilor, commented: “Our playground looks even better than we had hoped and is big, but still leaves us space for other games. The surfacing will help us use the equipment all year round without getting so wet and muddy. And, there will be less washing of muddy trousers! The outdoor classroom will be wonderful when it’s warm. It will help us to learn in a nice cool environment, as well as offering shade at playtimes on the hottest days.”

Funding for the project was made possible through kind donations to the school from Luminous, Newton and Hatley, Tom Francis of New Sell Ltd and the Co-op, who also attended the grand opening alongside representatives from Sovereign.
