“Together a team of professionals and young people have created a unique play space ... It looks fantastic, the young people love it.” (Karen Hughes, Leisure Development Manager, Taunton Deane Borough Council) In 2008 Taunton Deane Borough Council were awarded PlayBuilder money.
Following an extensive resident consultation, a need was identified to create an exciting and challenging play area on an existing large open space. Nottingham based company, Proludic were awarded the project, due to their expertise in the consultation field and innovative equipment range. Proludic advocate the need for public consultation at the start of a project.
They assisted in setting up a website with play specific questionnaires, working with play participation workers and a landscape architect. Local schools were invited to design their ideal play area using art and craft materials. The results received from these methods were overwhelming and the ideas brought forward, invaluable. Swan Paul Partnership worked with Proludic, Taunton Council and Barnardos to incorporate the design ideas from the consultation exercises.
The result was an area designed to maximise the play potential of the landscape, alongside fixed play equipment. Ground contours have been created to develop ‘pockets’ of activity in which to position the equipment. A subtle blend of natural materials were incorporated; sand and low level planting placed around toddler equipment and boulders and tougher materials for the older age group.
The various natural play elements are key components of the Playbuilder funding programme and show a move towards landscape led approaches to design. Aileen Shackell, Lead author of Design for Play commented on the area, “The play space has a pleasant character and 'feel', and illustrates many of the benefits of designing a landscape setting alongside the equipment. “ The site was officially opened in October and has had an excellent response from local residents. www.proludic.com
