Activity Surfacing Construction in Penrith

03 November 2015

One of Soft Surfaces Ltd’s most recent projects involved the installation of an activity surface for a school playground in Penrith. This work was carried out as part of a funding scheme by Sport England which was set up to improve physical activity for children in schools.

The facility was designed as a multi-use area enabling pupils to play lots of different games and activities in one place during PE lessons and break times. The chosen surface type was the Multisport synthetic carpet which was installed in a vibrant design with different coloured sections that could be used for individual activities. For this project, the school’s existing tarmac playground was used as the sub base as this provides durability. Next, Soft Surfaces’ installers laid out the synthetic turf carpet in the chosen design and secured it to the tarmac. Finally, an application of sand infill was applied throughout the carpet to enhance the playing qualities and keep the surface in top condition.

In addition to the multi-coloured activity surfacing, the design for this project also included fencing with games panels, a basketball hoop and a football goal. These extra features enable the students to enjoy a range of different sports and activities to improve their fitness and health. Once the project was completed, the school’s staff and students were very happy with the final result as the new facility can be used all year round during both lessons and extracurricular activities.
