Miele Professional laundry machines protecting the environment

30 January 2009

Environmental protection and sustainability combined with superb build quality have been the cornerstones of Miele Professionals' development programme for many years.

A reduction in the use of raw materials, energy, water and other assets is always uppermost in the minds of engineers when designing new washer-extractors, tumble dryers and flatwork ironers for commercial laundry applications.

Environmentally friendly and intelligent machines are one of the building blocks in a multi-faceted organisational structure reminiscent of a coral reef in which each element builds on another. This structure results in durable products which are simple to use, perfect in their functionality and future-proof.

As tumble dryers above all require uninterrupted energy input in order to evaporate moisture from damp laundry, Miele professional has gone to great lengths to optimise efficiency. Current tumble dryers with load capacities above 10 kg feature Miele's patented 'Air Recycling Plus' airflow and temperature controls that redirect expelled air in variable proportions back through the system to optimise drying results.

Further significant cost savings can be made with the purchase of a gas-heated tumble dryer. A gas-heated dryer with a 20 kg load capacity (PT 7501) can, for instance, reduce annual energy costs in the 'Cottons' programme by approximately half. Gas heating is an option on all dryers with a capacity of 7.5 kg and above as well as on numerous flatwork ironers and washer-extractors.

Flexible programming guarantees cost-efficient wash process
Gentle laundry care is also achieved through Miele's Profitronic M controls, which allows all programme parameters such as temperature, holding times and wash and spin times to be programmed to meet specific customer needs. A machine told before the start of the programme that the load size is only half the full capacity automatically optimises the washing process accordingly to conserve energy.

An integrated weighing system, optionally available on washer-extractors with load capacities of 10 kg and above, is an extremely convenient feature. This device automatically weighs the load and adjusts the use of resources accordingly. This results in shorter heat-up and water intake times, reducing energy consumption all round.

Electricity consumption on washer-extractors slashed
Today, washer-extractors achieve the same excellent cleaning results at 60°C as at 95°C only several years ago thanks to advanced technology and new programmes. This has resulted in a 40% reduction in electricity consumption compared with similar washer-extractors from 1982. Over the same period, water consumption for 95°C programmes has been reduced by 44% and for 60°C programmes by approximately 55%. This has also made a similar reduction in detergent consumption possible.

Environmental protection and sustainability from Miele
Environmental data relating to all aspects of production have been collated by Miele systematically since 1970; product-related environmental data has been gathered since 1990. As product performance and environmental protection are two sides of the same coin, all the production sites in Germany have installed an environmental management system accredited according to ISO 14001, combined with regular auditing and recertification.
