Infrared Sensors and Thermal Imaging Systems for Industrial Temperature Measurement

05 March 2009

Raytek® and Ircon®, two of the biggest names in industrial temperature measurement Thermal Imaging Systems will be at this years' MTEC exhibition.

Raytek® and Ircon®, the two leading names in infrared (IR) noncontact temperature measurement, will be present at Stand 1644 at MTEC with their combined product lines of high-quality, rugged infrared thermometers and systems that cover almost any industrial application, from point measurement to thermal imaging, in the temperature from minus 50°C up to plus 3500°C.

Raytek and Ircon infrared point sensors, linescanners and thermal imaging systems provide an effective solution for online process monitoring, where measuring and controlling temperature is critical to productivity and product quality.

Highlights displayed at MTEC are:

Ircon® Maxline® 2 Thermal Imaging System with New Camera Link Interface supporting multiple thermal imaging cameras for a variety of automated process control and inspection applications.

The Maxline 2 system with camera link interface is a complete package consisting of all the hardware and cable assemblies required to operate the Maxline 2 thermal imaging camera when interfaced with a camera link frame grabber.  The kit provides power, serial communication, composite video and 14-bit digital video to and from the camera.

The Maxline 2 camera is a compact, sealed (NEMA 4 - IP67 rated), stainless steel enclosed unit with no external moving parts.  The rugged camera housing is ideal for environments like steel mills, glass plants and other industrial facilities.  An accessory enclosure keeps the camera cool, and its lens clean in extremely harsh environments. In addition, a full range of accessories, such as air purge and water-cooling options are available for use in hostile locations.  This allows the Maxline 2 system to operate with minimal maintenance.

Dedicated Maxline 2 systems are available for specialized applications, such as automated image analysis, fiber-optic preform inspection, and torpedo car inspection.  Each system offers automatic calibration, ambient temperature and motion correction features, providing an accurate and repeatable perspective of process operations.

Raytek® High-speed Infrared Linescanner MP150 now with 1024 Measurement Points per Line. The MP150 features the latest electronics, optics, communications and mirror mechanisms. With 1024 measurement points per line and a scan speed up to 150Hz  it the Raytek MP150 gathers complete temperature data from very fast manufacturing processes. With an optical resolution up to 150:1 (measurement distance : spot size), built-in line laser and Ethernet-capability, the MP150 offers one of the most complete linescanning solutions on the market today.

Raytek® & Ircon® IR Temperature Measurement Solutions for Temperature Monitoring Applications in the Solar Manufacturing Industry.

Raytek and Ircon infrared thermometers provide an effective solution for online process monitoring, where measuring and controlling temperature is critical to productivity and product quality.  Solar applications range from silicon and wafer production, to photovoltaic cell and module manufacturing.

In polysilicon production, for example, the Raytek/Ircon IR solution is ideal for noncontact temperature measurement in CVD reactor environments.  The Modline® 5, Marathon MR and FR two-color ratio thermometers are insensitive to sight path obstructions, including deposits on reactor windows and cloudy process conditions inside the reactor.  Employing variable focus, high-resolution optics, they allow users to properly target small diameter polysilicon rods.

The high performance Modline 5, 5R, Marathon MR and Marathon MM thermometers offer critical features for single crystal silicon production.  These short wavelength, single-color and two-color ratio thermometers include variable focus, high resolution optics, and provide a very small measurement spot size at the silicon liquid/solid interface.  This is necessary for controlling the crystal pulling process.  An integrated video camera allows for real-time video output of the process environment, and built-in sensor, self-calibration/field calibration capabilities reduce maintenance requirements.

In addition, the Maxline 2 Thermal Imaging System with image analysis software enables users to identify bad cell interconnects in thin film silicon PV modules.  Defects in the cell interconnection can be readily identified by a precise thermal signature.

Throughout the solar industry, Raytek/Ircon IR noncontact temperature measurement solutions help manufacturers to recognize equipment malfunctions and process problems before they result in costly downtime.  This makes them valuable additional tools for plant and equipment maintenance and repair prevention.

Raytek® and Ircon® IR Products Provide Temperature Measurement Solutions for Use in Hazardous Locations
Raytek offers a special range of pyrometers which can be used in hazardous location.

The presence of combustible gases in certain industrial environments creates a serious risk of explosions. Intrinsically safe devices prevent explosions in hazardous locations by limiting the energy and surface temperature of the device under normal operation, or when conditions arise that could become hazardous.

Special models of the Raytek Thermalert® TX have been certified by PTB as intrinsically safe according to hazard class EEx ib IIC T4.  The TX series of two-wire fixed online infrared sensors is designed for online temperature monitoring of machinery and plant processes.

The Ircon Modline® 5 with Explosion Proof XP Housing has been designed for special Modline 5R sensors and is certified AEx d IIB + H2.  The rugged, compact XP housing ensures reliability in severe industrial environments.

The industries that will benefit from noncontact infrared thermometers include:   petrochemical refineries and tank farms, chemical/pharmaceutical plants, fire departments when flammable gases are present, hazardous waste disposal and sewage, oil exploration (especially offshore rigs), petroleum and gas pumping stations, aviation fueling and maintenance, as well as rail, auto and ship refueling, liquid natural gas storage, arms manufacturing and storage, hydrogen generating facilities, boiler rooms, and ink, laminate, and coating processes that emit volatile vapors.

An infrared thermometer enables you to recognize equipment malfunctions or process problems before they can affect the operational process or result in process downtime. This makes them valuable additional tools for plant and equipment maintenance and repair prevention.

Best of all, Infrared is Green
• Increased yield
• Extended equipment life
• Reduced energy and waste
• Paperless reporting and storage
