Wheelabrator Group puts Underground Development on Track

03 August 2007

Regeneration work at one of London’s Metropolitan and Circle Line stations is running on time, after a new architectural feature was completed thanks to the latest technology from world-leading designer and manufacturer of surface preparation equipment, Wh

The stainless steel cladding which features prominently within the station’s concourses, ticket areas and platforms boasts a robust, modern architectural finish resilient to scratching and anti-social behaviour, and offers a potentially endless product life.

This aesthetically pleasing yet work hardened finish has been produced using a shot peening technique, by Wheelabrator Group’s Impact Finishers team, for contractor McGrath.

Chris Pallot, business development manager for the Impact Finishers product range, said: “The 1,000sqm of stainless steel cladding needed to fulfil the architect’s vision whilst being durable in a hostile environment characterised by high footfall and traffic wear.

“Shot peening is ideally suited to this. There is no coating to degenerate or break down, as the finish is not an additional layer on the steel, but indentations on the surface. These are created by propelling small spherical media at the material under controlled conditions.

“These miniscule indentations form a hardened structure within the substrate, which dramatically increases its resistance to scratching and general wear and tear.”

The surface of the cladding is smooth to the touch and low in reflectivity, making it easy on the eye for commuters.

Mr Pallot said: “We were delighted to be chosen because of our proven ability to provide the particular finish required at a competitive price, and crucially, within stringent delivery times.

“The regeneration project is a considerable undertaking for all involved, so it’s key that each company delivers on their promise and that’s exactly what we’ve done.”

Impact Finishers was founded in 1966 and employs a 28-strong team across its sites in Coventry and Slough. In addition to the building trade, it serves the automotive, aerospace and medical industries, as well as the power generation and petrochemical plant sectors.
