Kaba provide automatic sliding fire rated doors for public library

21 October 2009

Leading door manufacturer and supplier Kaba Door Systems has provided automatic sliding fire doors at Hessle Library, Hull.

Working with East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Hall building Services, Kaba provided an automatic sliding SLX-SBF breakout fire door to the main entrance of Hessle library. The fire doors were specified as the entrance forms part of one of the buildings main fire break wall, the doors therefore were required to provide fire resistance and escape route to ensure its continued integrity. Linked into the fire alarm system, the doors automatically close, escape being provided by breakout door leaves which also close after use to provide continued fire resistance. The doors feature clear Pyro-stop fire rated glass and the leaves are powder coated to conform to council colours. The frame and operator header however were specified in white to aid visually impaired library users.

Hessle Library has benefited from East Ridings plans to refurbish and upgrade all of its library buildings to make them lighter, brighter and more welcoming places. Hessle Library is now a modern, welcoming facility that the community can be proud of.

Councillor Jane Evison, the councils' portfolio holder for libraries, said:

“Libraries are no longer about reading dusty books in silence and we wanted the environment inside Hessle Library to reflect that. Our library members are very important to us and we want more people to come and try our libraries and see what is on offer. The door provided by Kaba Door Systems Ltd is the first enhancement customers are aware of when entering the library. It allows easy and uninterrupted access for all customers and is aesthetically pleasing, which compliments the other enhancements in the library. When the library is closed and the door is locked, the large area of glass allows potential customers to view inside the library and see what we have to offer."

Using the technologically advanced Kaba SLX sliding door drive unit the industry unique SLX-SBF fire protection door offers the flexibility of a safe reliable, convenient and comfortable entrance system which allows access to be matched to pedestrian flow requirements together with flame resistance and a thermal shield for more than 30 minutes. In the event of a fire alarm the doors close and the breakout system turns the doors into manually operated swing doors. When the doors have completed their emergency escape route function, the leaves close automatically to resume the fire break status. Tested and approved to exceed British Standard BS476 part 22:1987, the Kaba SLX fire protection door range also features additional options for heavy duty operators and non-breakout doors.
