Weiss Gallenkamp supply latest technology to Airbus

24 September 2007

Weiss Gallenkamp have installed and commissioned a new and versatile piece of test equipment for Airbus in the form of an Altitude Chamber.

This chamber will prove to be extremely useful in investigating and providing solutions requiring testing components in extreme conditions. It has the added advantage of being rated for hazardous area zone 2 and suitable for accepting tests involving aircraft fuel.

The chamber was built by Weiss Gallenkamp in Germany, to an Airbus specification. The 'smart' chamber is capable of producing in a range of conditions such as low temperature (+100 °C down to -70 °C and low pressures (down to10mbara). The working volume is approximately a metre cubed and the chamber can be programmed to carry out automatic environmental profiles and can even email the customer if something unexpected occurs.

It is destined, initially, to perform accelerated life testing, with aviation turbine jet fuel, on in-service fuel pipe couplings in extreme conditions of loading. For this work, an electric motor drives a mechanism to impart simultaneous angular and axial deflections to a fuel coupling, whilst applying mechanical loads.

Similar tests will be carried out with internal vacuum, on simulated shrouded couplings. PLC controlled fuel and air systems have been designed, which provide the correct pipe internal pressures to the specimens and, at regular intervals, automatically apply a proof pressure to prove the coupling is not leaking. Safety shutdown systems are incorporated into the rig design. Proving work on new designs of fuel coupling are also planned.
