Wheelabrator Group Broadens Horizons and Lessens Carbon Emissions for Sheffield Painting and Blasting Company

Broadblast approached the market leaders when the blast wheels on its 1955 Tilghman swing table machine became worn and needed replacing.

Following a four-way pitch, Wheelabrator was chosen to manage and upgrade the modernisation of Broadblast’s existing machine using the latest TITAN blast wheel technology, the newest edition to the EMP. Designed specifically to improve the blast performance and efficiency of existing machinery by up to 40 per cent, it can be adapted to fit virtually any wheel blast machine.

Colm Grant, managing director at Broadblast, said: “We knew the outlay for new equipment was going to be a costly exercise, but by modernising all the existing equipment instead, we now have the flexibility to manage and accommodate our future vision, but at a fraction of the cost.

“Our aggressive expansion plan includes the development of blast cleaning and surface preparation services, to give our customers a one-stop shop solution. We are also aiming to reach full capacity on the factory floor, which already operates for 24 hours a day, six days a week.

“Customer satisfaction is very important to us. The installation of TITAN wheel has allowed us to offer an improved blast performance and faster turn around time, exceeding our expectations and ultimately those of our customers.

“Not only has the EMP provided improved efficiency, but it’s also cut our carbon footprint. Environmental responsibility is very important to us, so prior to the installation of TITAN, we invited the Carbon Trust to conduct a site survey. The recommendations they made were easily met through Wheelabrator’s technology, consequently saving us energy and money.

“We’re delighted with the product quality, performance and service we’ve received from the team at Wheelabrator and will have no hesitation in consulting them in our expansion plans.”

TITAN technology is also capable of lowering media consumption and drastically reducing downtime.
Jay Dorling, General Sales Manager Wheel Blast Products at Wheelabrator Group said: “A lot of Broadblast’s business comes through goodwill and customer loyalty, so it’s vital they maintain their custom through the provision of high quality service. The upgrades have allowed Broadblast to offer the finish of a new machine, but without a massive outlay, resulting in repeat business from customers old and new.

“Machines are investments, and when looked after properly can last for a very long time. One of Broadblast’s machines started its working life in 1955 in a foundry in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Broadblast bought it in 1981 and now, more than 50 years on, it is once again operating at full capacity, but with reduced energy and carbon emissions. The EMP is a proven, realistic and accessible avenue that I suggest more companies consider."
