Galvanizers get green-fingered with innovative gardening project

09 February 2011

A West Midlands company has offered its galvanizing service to an innovative new horticultural raised garden beds system which gives people an easy alternative to traditional gardening.

Wednesfield-based Edward Howell, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has galvanized the steel components used by Stourbridge firm Whites Raised Beds. Their pioneering design, for which a patent application is pending, allows flowers, vegetables and herbs to be grown in areas where traditional methods simply do not allow.

The raised beds, which consist of pre-cut, quality timber slotted into steel corner components, means that a variety of different shapes can be assembled. Squares, rectangles, C-shapes, and even cross-shapes can be easily constructed to fit to the required dimensions.

Previously a railway engineer for 25 years, Ian White, inventor of Whites Raised Beds, explained: “Our aim was to create a worthwhile and quality product – our raised beds are a cost-effective alternative to using brick, requiring no cutting, drilling, or screwing. The materials are incredibly durable and totally maintenance-free, with the Larch wood we have used turning a beautiful silver colour over the years.”

Jim Lindsay, Sales Manager of Edward Howell, said: “Solving a variety of problems for gardeners of all levels of experience, we were delighted to be asked to contribute to such an ingenious new product as Whites Raised Beds. The durability of the steel components means that the beds may outlive their owners, lasting for up to 70 years.”

The raised beds offer many other advantages over traditional gardening methods. The different height options available make gardening possible from a wheelchair, with no more uncomfortable stooping for those with back problems.

Easy-to-assemble and environmentally friendly, the beds are ideal for gardeners of all levels of experience, and the right soil conditions can be created much more efficiently than with traditional gardening, as the raised bed design overcomes common drainage problems. Perfect for use in council and school gardening initiatives, the raised height of the beds allows children to learn a life skill from a young age. Easily constructed on patios and rooftop gardens, Whites Raised Beds allow even inner-city-dwellers to get in on the gardening action.

Wedge Group Galvanizing is one of the largest hot dip galvanizing organisations in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years.  With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, they offer a truly national galvanizing service.
