Maximise your space - minimise your clinical waste

02 June 2011

The benefits of waste segregation using Hommerton Hospital as a case study.

Waste segregation has been a key phrase within the NHS for the last five years, since the introduction of HTM legislation but that doesn’t mean cross contamination isn’t still a massive problem.

Its estimated approximately 60% of waste thrown into clinical bins isn’t actually clinical waste at all. In a time where budgets are being cut, this is a needless expense, which can easily be resolved.

The solution to this problem isn’t only about training staff but making it as simple as possible to dispose of different types of waste. This is where Wybone comes in. The family run company made it their business to come up with a quick and easy way to get rid of different waste streams, while saving customers valuable money.

Wybone have solved this problem by creating the duo sackholder. The registered design allows two different waste streams to be collected in just one unit. How is that possible I hear you ask? Well the sackholder is split into two sections, each with a separate colour coded lid which helps prevent cross contamination. It can be ordered in 2 x 21 litres and 2 x 40 litres, with all segregation colour combinations available, so you can maximise your space and minimise your waste.

Homerton University Hospital was one of the first to take advantage of the new product by placing an order for its phlebotomy department. The Trust wanted a single unit that could be used to throw away two types of waste. While carrying out blood tests staff needed somewhere to dispose of both household (black lid) rubbish, like the plastic packaging from needles and also offensive (tiger stripe) waste such as gloves and outer dressings.

Graham Snowling is CHS estate manage for the Trust. He says: “I contacted Wybone and they recommended the duo 80 litre sackholder. This met our requirements and allowed us to have both a household and offensive waste stream in one unit with separate pedals and colour coded waste lids to identify the relevant waste disposal streams for staff, resulting in a cost saving to the trust, due to correct waste segregation.”

The risk of spreading infections is also greatly reduced by colour co-ordinated dual pedals. This means there is no need for the user to touch the unit while using it. The duo sackholder has been so successful a triple version has now been designed in 3x 40-litre size, with more sizes to come in the next few months – keep your eyes peeled!
