Purley town centre is fit for the Olympics

28 February 2012

Major urban regeneration has been completed in Purley, a town in the London borough of Croydon. Contractors, FM Conway constructed the improved and modern streets using Ultrascape’s renowned mortar paving system.

With the start of the London Olympics fast approaching, many regeneration and construction projects have been commissioned to complete before the games start.  One such project, funded by Transport  for London, has rejuvenated Purley town centre with plenty of time to spare before the prestigious opening ceremony of the games begins.

Improvements were made using Pro-Bed HS bedding mortar, Pro-Prime slurry primer and Flowpoint flowable grout.  Making up Ultrascape’s renowned mortar paving  system, the three products are proven to be BS 7533 compliant under UKAS testing methods. This British Standard promotes professional results with a minimum service life of 40 years.  What’s more, when using the system the paving can be opened to traffic 4 hours after grouting.

The improvements included a range of elements such as walkways, street trees, landscaping, signage and a new square creation.  All focused around accommodating vehicles whilst attracting people to the town for leisure and shopping.  A mixture of natural stone setts and slabs were chosen for the area, with granite details, new street furniture and lighting complimenting the new paving.

All Ultrascape materials are manufactured in the UK under the exacting requirements of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.  All customers are supported with technical advice and worked closely with at specification stage.  The premium products have been chosen by many specialists for an ever-expanding portfolio of major schemes across the country, similar to Purley.

Costing £1.4 million and completed in under eight months Purley town centre is now being trafficked daily by vehicles and pedestrians, and is all set for increased tourism during the prestigious games.
