Malicious fires in schools rise by 50 percent

14 June 2007

New national statistics show an alarming rise in school fires.

In strategies to combat these hazards, an increasing number of schools and colleges are choosing DORGARD, recognising that this acoustically activated fire door hold-open device offers the easiest, most cost-effective way of legally holding open fire doors safely, at any time of day or night.

It’s a worrying fact that malicious fires in schools have risen by almost 50 percent over the past seven years costing more than £1million per week. Most alarming of all is the rise in daytime arson attacks on schools, posing a very real and increasing risk to the safety of pupils. In response to these concerns, the Arson Prevention Bureau advises that '... schools can do much through some basic simple security measures to minimise the risks.'
DORGARD can be fitted in just 5 minutes. This unique battery-operated, ‘wire-free’, acoustically activated electronic fire-door hold open device, offers enhanced safety features and elegant simplicity, and complies fully with all relevant British Standards, EC Directives and UK Workplace Fire Regulations.
How does it work? No wiring is required as the device is battery-operated and fixed to the fire door itself so it can hold the fire door open at any angle. (The battery lifetime exceeds regulatory fire safety policy directives). Using proven microchip technology, this intelligent device listens for the fire alarm and on identifying its annunciation, automatically retracts the foot-operated plunger-retainer that has held open the self-closing fire door, allowing it to close.
