The Similarities of SEO and Building a House

07 March 2023

Believe it or not, but building a home and an SEO campaign are very similar indeed. When you build a house it takes a good few weeks, perhaps months before you have something that you can call a home, as before you put the roof on and put the windows and doors in, all you have are some walls that give you a little bit of shelter from the wind and the rain.

For those first few days or weeks, you could look at the structure and think,, “Where has all the money gone and what do I really have for all that expenditure?”

When it comes to a house, you can only really call it a home when the roof is on and the windows and doors, the heating system, staircase and kitchen are all in place. And all that takes time and a good deal of cash.

SEO is a Long Term Project

I am afraid it is the same with SEO. It can takes weeks before Google indexes a site, and months before it ‘really understands’ what the site is all about and grants it some consideration (this being especially the case when dealing with Your Money and Your Life areas – medical and financial sites).

It can take even longer before it calculates the ‘whole site quality score’ which is so important and yet of which so little is understood, and, in some cases years before a site is ‘trusted’ enough to do really well in a competitive keyword market place.

This delay is caused by Google ‘demanding’ that the content must be seen as trustworthy, and as the only way that Google can tell this is by counting the number of links to a site (and testing each one for relevance etc) it can take time for the quantity to be sufficiently high.

Matters are made worse by the fact that if you try to cheat and build links too quickly (in the house analogy this would be by putting a tarpaulin on as a roof) Google will just penalise you (and blow the tarpaulin off and down the street).

I hope you can now see why there is a similarity between building a house and SEO, both take time and in both cases, you only get the real benefit at the very end of the process.

But if you cannot wait all that time for a home, there is another way.

In the house analogy, this would be like putting up something resembling a tent to a really nice prefabricated home. Both can be in place within a few hours, and the same is true for an Adwords campaign. This can be up and running in very quick order indeed, the traffic flowing in just about as fast as you are willing to pay for it.

There is, however a drawback in that the ‘quick home’ you have created will collapse like a house of cards as soon as you stop paying for the clicks. It is a bit like having a home where you continually, every second, have to keep replacing the bricks, roof tiles and windows. As soon as you stop the wind and rain come rushing in and the home is not a home anymore.

But it is a quick way of getting somewhere warm to sleep in / get some visitors into a brand new site.

Taking the analogy to the limit, like some home builders, you can have both going on at the same time. For instance, you could have a nice high-quality caravan on site to live in while the house was being built, thereby getting shelter while your home was being constructed. It is more expensive but gives you somewhere to stay from day 1.

The Best of Both Worlds?

This is just like running an SEO campaign and an Adwords campaign at the same time, as this gives you traffic from day one. As in the example above it costs more (some clicks are eye-wateringly costly) but it does the job a lot quicker.

I hope this helps you understand a bit more about why SEO and home building are similar. And if you want to know more about SEO or Adwords then do please DM me email me at graham@somltd.co.uk.

But, if you want advice about building a house etc, I am not your man, my DIY skills are non-existent, just ask the wife for proof….
