Zaun’s New Hockey Pitch Fencing

07 April 2008

Zaun’s New Hockey Pitch Fencing is both Quieter and Cheaper than using traditional wooden hockey boards

One of the most regularly reported problems involving hockey pitches is the noise associated with the impacts of the balls against the wooden hockey boards surrounding the pitch. Up until now these boards have been necessary as with out them the relatively expensive fencing would quickly become irreparably damaged, with the resulting gaps allowing the ball to escape. The sacrificial boards absorb impacts and so the fence line is saved, however, the noise of the impacts can be heard from hundreds of meters away, often disturbing local residents or other amenity users.

Zaun Limited have developed a solution which not only significantly reduces the noise during play, but also reduces both installation and maintenance costs. Zaun’s innovative Hockey fencing uses eighteen 8mm horizontal wires to the lowest 210mm to sandwich the vertical wires of the mesh panel. This produces a surface that is able to withstand the high-speed ball impacts that occur during play.

The fact that there are no wooden boards or fixings to be purchased makes it is a more economical solution than using wooden boards, and the same feature means that installation is quicker, as once the fence panels are in place, no further time is required fixing boards.

However, probably the biggest advantage of the new system is the reduced noise of impact. The two systems were compared under identical conditions; distance from launch point to impact, playing surface, ball used and force applied. The noise at 1m distance of the impact against hockey boards was 97 dB. The noise at the same range using Zaun’s new hockey fencing was 68 dB. This dramatic decrease in impact volume is achieved through two means. The panels themselves are made in a single piece so the impact rapidly dissipates through the panel. The system also uses rubber EPDM inserts to insulate the panels from the posts. These inserts are put in place during installation and are a feature of all of Zaun’s sports fencing. They virtually eliminate ‘rattle’ during play as each panel is insulated from the rest of the fence line and the inserts themselves absorb any vibrations resulting from play.

The non-hockey board portion of the fence is available as a 200x50mm twin horizontal wire mesh, or if the pitch is expected to receive heavy use it is also available as 100x50mm twin wire mesh. The system is available up to 3m high in a single panel, and is available up to 6m high using multiple panels.
