Tarkett adds a touch of nature to Plumpton College

03 September 2009

In order to accommodate more students at the colleges' main site in East Sussex, a new accommodation block has recently been completed utilising a range of Tarkett floorcoverings for the bedrooms and bathrooms.

Plumpton College is a specialist college offering land-based courses at further and higher education level. The new two-storey block provides administration offices and a library on the ground floor, while 75 new bedrooms and 11 shower blocks are located on the first floor.

PH Buxton & Sons of Brighton carried out the installation as Steve Knight explains; “We’ve been installing Tarkett products for many years now. When the architect on Plumpton wanted something a little different for the student accommodation, we recommended Tarketts' Compact Resilient range since it offers a much wider choice of finishes than competitors’ equivalents.”

Tarketts' Acczent Compact Wood was chosen for the bedrooms, with over 1000m2 installed throughout the new building. This heavy-duty vinyl floorcovering is ideal for a wide range of applications, featuring a TopClean XP surface treatment that makes it much easier to clean without ever needing wax or polish. It is possible to save up to 30% on maintenance costs, with a 50% reduction in consumption of water, energy and detergents. The 0.8mm PVC transparent wear layer provides exceptional resistance to abrasion and indentation making it extremely hardwearing.

The Acczent Wood range features a variety of wood effect finishes from pale, subtle woods to warmer, richer-grains and distressed finishes, all of which can be used to create a more homely feel to an interior space.

The shower rooms needed a slip-resistant flooring, but there were also other requirements as Steve Knight explained; “It was important to find a safety flooring that would offer easy cleaning and maintenance as well as long-term durability. The installation at Plumpton was unique in that we used Tarkett’s iQ Granit for the walls in the shower rooms, along with Granit Multisafe on the floors.”

Tarketts' Granit Multisafe is a specialist flooring for use in wet areas, and is designed to provide good grip for feet even when the floor is slippery with soap and water.  The dense, impermeable surface and well rounded studs mean Granit Multisafe is hygienic and easy to clean, offering low maintenance and excellent wear resistance. It is part of Tarketts' highly successful wetroom concept, which integrates impervious floor and wall coverings to create a waterproof, hygienic and safe bathing environment.
