Found in thousands of schools but is window film being used to maximum effect? Part 2.

It is not just the service that has improved. The technology of window film has advanced immeasurably from what was available ten years earlier. Global innovators like 3M and Bekaert have not only made window film more effective at reducing risk of injury, they have advanced other properties which make it far more beneficial. Window film has recently been included as a beneficial product in the Clinton Climate Initiative under the Clinton Foundation. Many of the additional benefits window film can provide are of interest to educational bodies.

One additional benefit falls into an area increasingly under the spotlight in education – the issue of natural daylight. Students may not complain about the lack of daylight– but the affect on attention and learning is well documented. When it comes to new build and major refurbishment, architects are able to focus on providing as much natural daylight as possible.

However, most organisations have to deal with existing glazing in educational buildings built any time in thew last 200 years and more and inevitably not designed for screen-based learning. For much of the year blinds of various sorts are used to shield from glare and heat – in effect cutting out natural light.

Window film can filter out up to 75% of the heat and glare. Modern technological window films allow as much natural daylight through as glass yet filter out 40% of the heat. In other words they provide a flexible balance between shielding natural light and still providing a comfortable place to study.
