Rational SelfCooking Centre gives Care Home catering better control

15 June 2009

SelfCooking Center gives the kitchen a competitive advantage.

Cooking in care homes is always going to be a highly skilled occupation. At the same time it is never going to have the glamour associated with the top-end chefs; not only are the tastes of care home patients more 'traditional' and less adventurous, but also since their health is normally more delicate, factors such as food hygiene and healthy eating are important.

Yet good, healthy food can often be a key factor that differentiates one care home from another. And the issue is not only improving food quality but also keeping costs under control, allowing more resources to be dedicated to care itself. The SelfCooking Center from Rational is the ideal cooking system for the care home environment, the company says, because it helps the chef cook consistently healthier food, automatically, and with lower energy and running costs.

And with the introduction of Rational's latest technology, called CareControl, Rational has helped to dramatically reduce running costs and ensure reliability for care home kitchens. CareControl prevents scale buildup, reduces maintenance costs and makes daily cleaning easy. Because the CareControl technology eliminates the need for a dedicated water softener, it frees up still more space in the kitchen, while the CleanJet self-cleaning system helps to keep the SelfCooking Center 'showroom clean'. By cooking the food in its own ideal 'climate' (temperature and humidity) the SelfCooking Center helps to retain healthy vitamins, nutrients and flavour.

Since cooking with the SelfCooking Center is automatic, it delivers perfect results time after time. And it's very easy to use. Simply tell the oven what type food is being cooked and press the button. There’s normally no need for any timers, programming, basting, turning or even watching. The SelfCooking Centre cooks the food exactly how it's needed - and cooks up to 15% faster than conventional combi-steamers.

The system's versatility means it can also save space by replacing other units such as bratt pans, fryers, microwaves, steamers and conventional ovens. A series of SelfCooking Center units can be programmed and monitored remotely, even off-site, producing full HACCP reports - especially important for care home catering.
