The birth of the Limescale-Free Combi

05 November 2009

Rationals' CareControl® frees chefs from the tyranny of limescale and cuts running costs too.

It is the first combi to have CareControl, a feature that flushes out the water-borne minerals that cause limescale deposits. And CareControl means there's no need to fit a water softener to the combi, because even in hard water areas the SelfCooking Center is always limescale-free.

Limescale deposits have been a problem with combis ever since the first combi steamer was invented back in the 1970s and developing the technology behind CareControl has been a long-term project. In 1989 Rational developed a system for automatically rinsing the steam generator, using water pressure to flush out limescale particles. This feature doubled the interval between manual descaling of a combi. Then in 2000 the company developed the first CalcDiagnosis system, which automatically monitored limescale build-up and warned when a descale was due.

Now CareControl has finally conquered the limescale issue in combis. And by eliminating the need for water treatment, it also eliminates the need to service the water treatment system, cutting the cost of owning a combi by hundreds of pounds per year.

How it works
CareControl automatically monitors the SelfCooking Center and tells the operator when the unit needs cleaning and descaling. At that point, staff simply put a 'Care Tab' into the unit's drawer, which is similar to one on a domestic washing machine, and put detergent tablets into the basket in the cooking cabinet. Once that's done, the control button sets CareControl in operation and the Rational cleans and descales itself. The Care Tab has special scale-dissolving ingredients that prevent scale build up.
