Wellingborough is streets ahead with Ultrascape Mortar Paving System

14 June 2011

Ultrascapes' Pro-Bed HS, Pro-Prime and Flowpoint have played a major role in regenerating Wellingborough’s town centre.

The £2 million initiative, financed by Growth Area Funding through Northants Development Company, involved making significant improvements to Wellingborough town’s principal streets, footpaths and public spaces. The council's aim was to make the town centre more accessible, convenient and safer for pedestrians while maintaining access to the town for vehicles.

High quality paving on footways and around pedestrian crossings has created a more accessible, integrated and pedestrian-friendly environment. The fresh new look to the streets provides more space for pedestrians, with improved road crossings, and a rejuvenation of public spaces.

A dedicated bus lane has also been introduced, giving bus priority to encourage public transport use. Wellingborough Council in conjunction with PGR Construction specified Ultrascape’s Pro-Bed HS Bedding Mortar, Pro-Prime Slurry Primer and Flowpoint Rapid Set Flowable Grout for use by the main contractor May Gurney and Engineering Consultant WSP to lay the Tegula block paving, York Sandstone, Chinese Granite kerbs and setts.

The work was carried out in two phases with initial improvements being made to Sheep Street and Silver Street using Ultrascape’s BS 7533 Compliant Mortar Paving System. The contractors were pleased with the performance of Ultrascape’s bedding materials in phase one and continued to work with them to complete phase two on Market Street, Cambridge Street, Gloucester Place and Midland Road. Ultrascape Pro Bed HS fine bedding concrete was supplied in 30 tonne bulk silos. Perfect for large schemes where high volumes of bedding concrete are required at the touch of a button.

It provides a bedding base that conforms to the strict requirements of BS 7533. Ultrascape Pro-Prime Slurry Primer is specifically formulated to provide an exceptional bond of greater than 2N/mm² between all types of stone. It only requires the simple addition of water before it can be applied to the stone elements.

Ultrascape Flowpoint , a rapid setting flowable grout, is formulated for early trafficking and can be poured over paved areas and simply washed away, with no risk of staining. It can be opened to foot traffic after only one hour due to its fast setting properties. From fine bedding concrete and slurry primers to high performance flowable grouts and surface protection liquids, all Ultrascape materials conform to the British Standard (BS 7533 parts 7 & 12, pavements constructed with clay, natural stone or concrete pavers).

With the simple addition of water, the Ultrascape range facilitates ease of use and early trafficking to ensure minimum disruption within town and city environments.
