Shared values forge new partnership; Stannah and the Brunel Institute

14 February 2011

Education is at the core of fine engineering and one of Britain’s greatest engineers was Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The Brunel Institute (BI) is a world-class learning and conservation facility, partly built on the footprint of Brunel’s Steamship Engine Works alongside the ssGreat Britain. It houses the outstanding National Brunel Archive with its collection of over 45,000 objects, formed in collaboration with the University of Bristol and the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust.

Stannah and other leading UK companies will form the Brunel Institute Corporate Academy and, in partnership with the Trust, help to deliver educational programmes that will engage children -including pre-schoolers and teenagers. From storytelling workshops through to the innovative ‘Future Brunels’ project aimed at supporting and encouraging promising pupils to fulfil their potential, the Brunel Institute aims to put education at the forefront of their activities.

Stuart Beard, Manager of Stannah in the South West and South Wales (and himself a highly-qualified lift engineer), explains why the company chose to become a Corporate Sponsor: ‘Stannah are a family of engineers who began selling lift equipment in 1867. today Stannah is still anindependent family company, proud of its heritage and passionate about its lift expertise.

We do our best to support educational programmes to encourage children of all ages to enjoy science and technology and, hopefully, inspire future Brunels. Stannah already support Arkwright Engineering Scholars and are delighted to encourage an enthusiasm for engineering in the UK. We are particularly looking forward to working to enable underprivileged children in the Bristol area to gain access to the wonders of Brunel’s ssGreat Britain and the experience of ‘reliving’ history in our immediate area. When you are based in Bristol you cannot fail to be inspired by Brunel’s work as it is around us every day.

The ssGreat Britain Trust have created a unique conservation project that celebrates Brunel’s extraordinary skills, preserves his lifetime’s work and keeps it in our city for everyone to enjoy. I cannot think of a more worthwhile cause to support. We look forward to working with like-minded people at the Institute.’

Stuart and his team from Stannah Lift Services look after the lifts at Brunel’s ss Great Britain and the Brunel Institute, at the University of Bristol and at hundreds of other locations across the South West of England and South Wales. UK-wide, Stannah look after over 81,000 lifts, 24/7, 365 days a year.

Laura Mercury,Fundraising Officer for the ss Great Britain Trust, was there to welcome Stannah on board and echoes Stuart’s delight in the partnership:
‘Stannah is an ideal Corporate Sponsor for the Trust and we are delighted that we will have access to their expertise to support our educational programme. We look forward to sharing knowledge that will help our young students develop a love for technology and offer them life-changing opportunities.’

Brunel’s ssGreat Britain was recently awarded the Rough Guide to Accessible Britain Award for ‘Best Heritage Venue’. As well as full wheelchair access, the museum attraction provides facilities for the blind and visually impaired, guides for British Sign Language (BSL) users, guide and hearing dogs are welcome, and dedicated assistants have free entry.
