Aggreko UK helps National Blood Service ‘Do something amazing’

10 July 2008

Aggreko UK, leaders in the rental of power, temperature control and oil-free compressed air systems, is providing a complete emergency power contingency plan for The National Blood Service (NBS).

In the event of an emergency or planned power outage, back-up generators provided by Aggreko UK will help safeguard vital blood supplies at blood banks and tissue centre across the UK.

NBS stores over 40,000 litres of blood across its network of centres and Aggreko UK conducted site surveys to establish the power requirements at each of the 12 locations.  The company tailored its  contingency plan  accordingly based on site access, available space to locate the generator, equipment availability, connection procedures, load profile and fuel consumption.

In the event of a crisis, the NBS makes one call to Aggreko UK’s National Rental Centre, which holds a complete record of the NBS plan and will arrange the dispatch of the relevant equipment.  A specialist Aggreko UK engineer will also be sent to the site to oversee the set-up and starting of equipment.  Once the generators are up and running, Aggreko UK also provides a fuel management service so that the machines operate effectively.

Jeff Short, area sales manager at Aggreko UK explains: “Contingency planning is important to all businesses and organisations,  particularly when the  operations rely  on   power supply or temperature control.  Companies need a plan that will get them up and running as quickly as possible.  We can help by identifying potential issues and providing the necessary back-up equipment either for standby or in the event of an emergency situation. The National Blood Service has priority access to Aggreko UK’s extensive hire fleet of generators.”

Paul Cooper, NHSBT National technical manager and John Hutchinson, area facilities manager Sheffield from the NBS comment: “We have used Aggreko’s smaller generators for our mobile blood units but had never considered having a contingency plan in place to use the equipment in an emergency.  Matthew Watson, a sales engineer from Aggreko UK, initially produced a plan for our Sheffield site which we were so impressed with, that we told them to roll out the programme for all our blood centres.

“When the public take the time and effort to donate blood, it’s imperative that we ensure that all donations reach the donor in perfect condition.  Power cuts across the country could result in a large percentage of the stored blood being lost.  Having back-up generators available provides peace of mind for the operation.”

Aggreko UK provides expert advice to help businesses plan and prepare for any circumstance that may impact on power generation or temperature control.  Its tailor-made solutions include provision of   equipment, placement and transportation.  With a 24/7 rental centre and a national network of service centres, equipment is always close-by, ensuring a rapid response.
