Weidmüller surge protection: VARITECTOR SPC

16 April 2010

Pluggable surge protection for C&I (control and instrumentation) circuits

With VARITECTOR SPC Weidmüller offers a new surge protection family for the C&I technology. Concerning the Control and Instrumentation technology it is important to protect the interfaces against power surges.

This protection is necessary in the immediate vicinity C&I devices. The surge protection family VARITECTOR SPC are predestined for this purpose. The VARITECTOR SPC family has a compact design of only 17.8 mm and combines the following three features: protection, indication and remote signalling. The surge protection can easily be exchanged due to a pluggable arrester, without having to disconnect the wiring. Furthermore the arrester can easily be checked with the V-Test device.

Surge protection VARITECTOR SPC Weidmüller developed its surge protection family VARITECTOR SPC for the detection and indication of errors as well as for the monitoring of instrumentation and control circuits. The pluggable surge protection VARITECTOR SPC stands out due to high protective function and compact design. Internal monitoring of the VARITECTOR SPC R controls error detection and indication.

A green LED shows correct operation, i.e. protection is granted. A red LED indicates an error, in which case an error message is automatically sent to the evaluation module VSPC-Control Unit. The evaluation module can sample up to 10 surge protection modules. All VARITECTOR SPC modules can advantageously be disconnected or exchanged during operation without affecting the impedance – without breaking the instrumentation circuit or the wiring. The V-Test testing device is used for operational tests of the VARITECTOR SPC, and it allows problem-free observance of service intervals required by the IEC 62305 standard.

In process automation, industrial and building automation, each millimeter within a control cabinet counts. Therefore Weidmüller developed its surge protection family VARITECTOR SPC as space saving modules. Four binary signals or two analogue signals only require 17.8 mm of space. Pulsed energy up to 20 kA (8/20 µs) and 2.5 kA (10/350 µs) is effectively discharged by the screw-less PE-conductor via the earthed mounting rail. Reliable contact is established by the latching of the modules. Therefore the surge protection can be used without restrictions according to the IEC 62305 standard.

All VARITECTOR SPC modules feature a colour code system symbolizing the different voltage levels thus facilitating maintenance of the control cabinet. A coding element prevents plugging errors. All arresters as well have colour codes for the different voltage levels allowing quick identification in the control cabinet, thus facilitating service and initiation.

The EMC-SET for the connection of shielded cables offers additional comfort. The shielded connector EMC-CONNECTOR and shielded tie wraps EMC-TIE form part of the EMC-SET enabling easy connection of the shielding to the tension clamp connection of the VARITECTOR SPC modules.

All VARITECTOR SPC products have been tested according to current standards (IEC61643-21): They fulfill the safe short circuit mode classes D1, C1 and C2 for cases of overload by alternating current. In the future the product line will be supplemented by products for ATEX-tested applications in intrinsically safe electric circuits.
