Morecombe Rise

20 October 2008

Twelve million pounds has been spent on phase six and seven to protect the Morecombe coastline. The project first began over nineteen years ago.

The project has included the reconstruction of the promenade and the redevelopment of Morecambe’s West End sea front to improve city defences.  Addastone was called upon to install a resin bonded gravel surface from Addagrip for the Sandylands Promenade and the West End Gardens.

Working with main contractor Birse Coastal, BCA Landscape was the lead designer for the garden and promenade.  BCA devised the garden infrastructure and worked alongside Broadbent Artworks and Russ Coleman who helped create artwork and sculptures.

The West End Partnership, a council-led initiative, also contributed to the garden’s design. The final design concept for the West End Gardens included children’s play areas, landscaping, new lighting, pathways, artwork and water sculptures, with Addastone used to surface the pathways and the park’s main square.  As part of the surfacing, local pupils’ drawings were recreated using templates and different coloured resin.  Addastone was also used to enhance cycle and jogging paths on the promenade.

On specifying Addastone, Mike O’Connell, partner at BCA Landscape said, “Addastone was chosen for its decorative qualities, as it has a natural, hardwearing finish.  We have used Addastone on past projects and have always been very happy with the results.”

In total around 6,000 square metres of Addastone was laid in Rhine Gold and Staffordshire Pink, as well as a blue glass aggregate for the artwork.  Addastone approved contractor Midland Decorative Surfaces acted as project surfacing contractors, with Pat Weldon commenting, “Addastone is easy to install and was suited to this project as it has anti-slip properties and can accommodate the curved forms and shapes through the pathways”.

The Addastone system uses natural or recycled aggregate bound with clear resin to form a hardwearing surface with the appearance of loose gravel, but without the associated maintenance issues.  Addastone is suitable for light vehicle and pedestrian trafficking and the aggregate can be blended to match perfectly with its surroundings.

The West End Gardens officially opened in Autumn 2007, followed by the opening of the Sandylands promenade in February 2008.  Both designer and contractor are delighted with the results.  Mike O’Connell added, “The finished surface looks fantastic.  We are very pleased to report that both the promenade and garden have been very well received by the local community.”
