Many of the UK’s buildings constructed over twenty years ago would have had either traditional traction (DC/AC) motors or hydraulic systems installed to move a lift car. For those lifts, using traction motors each building needed a motor room above the lift shaft. Today with a wider choice of motor and hydraulic systems, there remain millions of buildings in the UK that have retained a motor room, or need one, due to the speed and duty requirements of the lift motor/s.
