About us

Cygnus Instruments Ltd is a UK manufacturer of surface and underwater ultrasonic thickness gauges which all use the Cygnus-pioneered Multiple-Echo technique to give accurate, error-checked metal thickness measurements through coatings.

Incorporated within the latest range of ultrasonic thickness gauges is Single-Echo and Echo-Echo measuring modes which allows users to measure uncoated surfaces with heavy front-face and/or back-wall corrosion or measure attenuative materials such as cast metals, plastics and composites.  These models include the:

  • Cygnus 2+ Hands Free Multi-Mode Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge - designed for climbing, rope access and belt-mounted applications with its rotatable end-mounted OLED display.
  • Cygnus 4+ General Purpose Multi-Mode Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge - ideal for most hand-held applications and offering features such as sequential data logging and an A-scan display.
  • Cygnus 6+ PRO Multi-Mode Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge - offering an array of features including comprehensive data logging, A-scan display, real time B-scan, Bluetooth connectivity, unique dual display, plus much more.
  • Cygnus DIVE Underwater Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge - with its brightly coloured AMOLED display and large numbers, thickness measurements are visible even in poor conditions.  This underwater thickness gauge also offers other key features such as live A-scan display, data logging, stable measurement indicator, topside repeater with video overlay, etc.
Also available is the range of Cygnus Multiple-Echo ultrasonic thickness gauges used for accurate and reliable metal thickness readings without the need to remove protective coatings, these gauges include:

  • Cygnus 1 Intrinsically Safe - certified intrinsically safe to ATEX Marking Group I & Group II, CSA Class 1 Group A, B, C & D Division 1, this gauge has been designed for measuring metal thickness in potentially explosive environments and can be used in Zone 0, Zone 1 hazardous areas, requires no plant shutdown or hot work permit and is approved for use in mines.
  • The standard Cygnus 2 Hands Free, designed for rope access and belt-mounted applications, and the Cygnus 4 General Purpose, designed for most hand-held applications.
  • Cygnus Heavy Duty - an extremely rugged multiple-echo ultrasonic thickness gauge that is simple to use and provides accurate metal thickness gauging measurements in harsh environments.
  • Cygnus Underwater - the original hand-held underwater thickness gauge from Cygnus Instruments, designed for use by divers undertaking subsea surveys.
  • Cygnus Mini ROV Mountable Gauge - designed in conjunction with VideoRay and pressure tested to 500 meters, this underwater gauge facilitates thickness testing which would have been previously infeasible using larger ROVs or divers.
  • Cygnus ROV Mountable Subsea Gauges - offering two types of ROV mountable thickness gauges, one depth rated to 2,000 and the other to 4,000 meters.  These subsea thickness gauges have been designed to measure metal thickness in the harshest operating conditions which would otherwise be inaccessible by divers or smaller ROVs
In addition to digital ultrasonic thickness gauges, Cygnus also manufacture an ABS type approved ultrasonic hatch cover leak detector, Cygnus Hatch Sure.  Cygnus Hatch Sure is used for testing weather tightness of hatch covers providing a quick and effective method of evaluating hatch seals and aiding the prevention of sea water ingress
